Following the immense popularity of E.L. James’ novel Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s no surprise that a movie adaptation of the novel is currently underway. It’s the first instalment of James’ erotic trilogy, which charts heroine Anastasia Steele’s sexual adventures with business magnate Christian Grey. Noted for its explicitly erotic scenes featuring a wide spectrum of sexual practises, the book has also sparked a new-found interest in sexual adventurism, with an increase in sales of sultry bras, corsets, and sex toys.

Kelly Marcel, who is writing the screenplay for the new film, has said that the movie is “100% going there” in terms of retaining the R-rated scenes. The movie is sure to have an 18 rating in the UK, but at this early stage (the film is set to be released in early 2014) there’s not much else we know for certain.
But of course there is plenty to speculate about! With the final cast yet to be revealed, rumours about who should play the sexually dominant billionaire Grey and the naïve and unassuming Ana, continue. After strong rumours claiming the contrary, actresses Emma Watson and Mila Kunis have both confirmed that they would not be starring in the adaptation, with Watson tweeting: “Who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life.”
Meanwhile another fan favourite, Shailene Woodley, might be out of the running, having recently won roles in several big budget movies including Divergent, which is likely to be spun into several sequels. If this happens, the actress will be unable to commit to the three Fifty Shades movies. Other potential actresses for the lead role include Alexis Bledel, Amanda Seyfried, Emily Browning, Lucy Hale and Emelia Clarke.
As far as the male lead goes, possible actors include Alexander Skarsgard, Jessie Pavelka, Matt Bomer and Henry Cavill. Ryan Gosling recently topped Cosmopolitan fan polls as the favourite for Christian Grey, whilst Ian Somerhalder from Vampire Diaries may be a favourite for author James, who recently tweeted “:D” to a photo of Somerhalder in a mask. Somerhalder has said there’s “nothing official” yet, and a casting decision is not going to be made any time soon.
